ExxonMobil Promotes STEM Education with Osuwela and Universidade Eduardo Mondlane

Maputo, Mozambique – ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada in partnership with Osuwela celebrated today the final of the Scholastic Robotics competition, “Astrobot”, in Maputo. The initiative provided months of robotics training for teachers and students of six different high schools around greater Maputo and culminated in the championship held on October 29 at Josina Machel School. The benefiting schools are: Francisco Manyanga, Maguanine, Josina Machel, Estrela Vermelha, Noroeste 1 and Laulane. The event was attended by the Minister of Education and Human Development, Carmelita Nhamashulua, as well as the National Director for Secondary Education, Gina Guibunda.

As part of ExxonMobil’s commitment to STEM education in Mozambique, ExxonMobil announced support for UEM’s Center of Coordination of Gender Issues (CeCAGe) program that focus on tutoring young girls in preparing for their admissions exams in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related fields at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) and other higher learning schools. The two-month program provides intensive training math, chemistry, physics and science to more than 120 girls.

“Education is a pillar of ExxonMobil’s community strategy and we are happy to partner with organizations that privilege youth.” said Jos Evens, General Manager for ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada. “We are proud of the perseverance by the implementers and the students who, despite the challenges brought on by the Pandemic were able to progress with their studies.”

Speaking on behalf of CeGAGe, Director Gracinda Mataveia stated, “STEM Education is critical to the development of Mozambique. By tutoring these students in these technical fields, we are hoping to not only increase the percentage of girls studying these degrees, but also make them more employable, and contribute to the overall development of the nation.”
